Games and Systems
Types of Games/Systems
- Console
- Handheld
- Computer
For the uninitiated: Gaming is the act of participating in a game, be it local (player vs. system) or Live (player vs player over local, LAN, Wi-Fi, or other connectivity). Wii, Playstation, and XBox are consoles; they are stationary systems who's primary function is to gaming. Playstation Portable (PSP) and Nintendo's Gameboy (GB) and DS lines (GB, GBAdvance, Advance SP, DS, DSLite, DSi, DSiXL) are handheld, or portable, systems. Traditional computers are also capable of Gaming. Usually one will see single player games on PC that might or might not also include network capabilities for Live gaming. Sid Meyer's Civilization is such a series that functions as a single player PC game with Live functionality, so too do Rock Band and Guitar Hero have similar functions for PS3, XBox 360, and Wii - conceivably a Gamer in America and a Gamer in Europe can game head-to-head over the Internet. (Isn't modern technology great?)
Computer games (aka Video games) are much more than just a waste of time. Socialization that was once done in the street (made dangerous by crime rates and traffic) is now done online; like FaceBook and MySpace, games provide such an avenue. Games also provide for a means of cognitive expansion (Majong, Go!, etc.) and sometimes physical therapy. Wii games, especially, provide for physical fitness activities with accessories like the WiiFit board and the WiiSports pack (baseball bat, tennis racket, etc.). Yes Gaming has its dangers, too - such as Nintendinitis (tendinitis of the hands from too much gaming, aka Blackberry Thumb from too much texting) and adverse reactions in those with photosensitive Epilepsy (made infamous by Pokémon) - but, all in all, Gaming is a positive experience. Herein find what every Gamer needs to keep their Console Gaming experiences happy.
Note that as frustrating as it sometimes might be, it is in every gamers best interest to network their consoles in order to receive system updates and game patches in the easiest and most expedient manner possible. That said, links to manual updates are provided here (where available).
